We thank the Exploratorium for providing us a meeting space.
Dear All, I just wanted to let you know about a project I am working on that may interest many of you. I am the community ambassador for OpenStreetMap, an open source project to collaboratively map the entire world. It can be considered a sort of wikipedia for maps. There are over 70,000 participants in OpenStreetMap worldwide, and we are working to increase participation here in the US. Participants collect information to put on the map (cycle / hiking trails, natural features, historic plaques, museums, other points of interest). They then upload the information to our online map. They can also correct data they see that is incorrect, as well as utilize the data in many unique ways. Currently the map is being used to create bike maps, route maps, on GPS units and in many other capacities. Please visit our website at openstreetmap.org to learn more. Please share this information with others and feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I will be hosting Mapping Party events throughout the Bay Area. I am actively looking for organizations to partner with as well as venues to host the events in. This weekend I am hosting an event in Oakland. Details for the event can be found: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Oakland Thanks and sorry for the long post. Sarah |
